The written portion of the CNA exam does not have to involve the use of a computer although it might. It is up to the state contractor which administers the examination to decide the method of testing. Many testing facilities still use a paper test, with a separate answer sheet. In some states, candidates also have the option to challenge the CNA examination orally. The nurse aide candidate must specifically request an oral examination when filling out the testing application. The oral examination involves listening to each test question on a cassette tape or CD, and marking the correct answer on an answer sheet.
