State-funded grants and sponsorships from different organizations are the typical forms of assistance awarded to CNA students. Nursing homes are the main sponsors for individuals interested in nursing assistant programs. A nursing home which is approved by the state to offer CNA training classes will typically select a few students and train them at no cost, sometimes even paying the student a small amount for the duration of the program. Some of these facilities do expect you to work there for a certain amount of time in return for the training, but some will train you even without a work contract. I would advise you to call nursing homes which are within a reasonable traveling distance from where you live and inquire about their nurse aide training courses. If possible set up an appointment and speak with the program director in person. They might have classes during the night, but most likely you would have to attend the courses full-time. Another option is to speak with a community college counselor and ask what educational grants may be available to you based on your income and need. They will help you find any state-funded programs or scholarships.

I am really interested in becoming a certified nursing assistant. I am in the military and we go out to sea continuously. I do not have too much time to actually attend a program until next year. Who offers online CNA classes?

Certified nursing assistant courses have both classroom and clinical instruction components. While you might be able to complete the theoretical component through an online course, the hands-on clinical training must be conducted at a facility such as a nursing home or hospital. Even if you find a program which offers online courses for the theoretical portion of the class, you still have to be present for on-site clinical training in order to complete the course. Even though you might have to wait a year until you are able to enroll and complete a nursing assistant training class, you still have the opportunity to decide on a particular school in the state where you are stationed in next. If you want to go further, contact the school and ask which textbook they use for their CNA classes. Purchasing the book and studying when you have time will prepare you for the class as well as for the state exam. Good luck!
