CNA Classes in Lower South Texas - Region 11
To legally call yourself a certified nursing assistant in Texas you must challenge and pass the CNA examination. Once you complete a state-approved nurse aide training program, you can register and sit for the certification exam. The entity who provided your CNA training will usually register you for the exam and let you know the date and time of your appointment. In rare cases you might need to schedule the CNA exam yourself. The CNA exam in Texas is administered by the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Services (NACES).
This organization works with the state designated contractor, Promissor, to provide testing services for nursing assistants in Texas. The main goals of the NACES foundation is to provide services which lead to a superior quality of care in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Supervising and coordinating the state testing of CNA students ensures that only qualified individuals who pass the exam are certified as nurse assistants in Texas. According to the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA), only nurse aides who are enrolled in a CNA training course or listed on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry may work as a nurse aide in a nursing facility.

How do I know if I am eligible for reciprocity to transfer my CNA certificate to Texas? How much does it cost to apply for reciprocity? How long will it take?

You are eligible to apply for CNA certification in Texas through reciprocity if you are already certified as a nursing assistant in another state AND are listed as active and in good standing on the CNA registry of your current state. As far as I know, there are no fees associated with applying for reciprocity in Texas. According to the Texas Department of Aging and Disability, the whole process takes about two to three weeks, depending on how quickly you and your previous employer complete and send the required forms.
