CNA Classes in Texas Region 6 - Gulf Coast
The practice of medical professionals and paraprofessionals in the state of Texas is subject to stringent regulations. Licensed nursing homes must ensure that every nursing assistant working for the facility has a current certification. Do you meet the requirements for CNA recertification in the state of Texas? A nurse aide must renew her certificate every two years, a process known as recertification. To qualify for certificate renewal the state requires proof of work within the previous two years. The conditions you must satisfy are the following: you have worked as a CNA for eight hours within the last twenty-four (24) months and received pay for your services.
In addition, you should have no charges of abuse, neglect, misappropriation of resident property or other criminal convictions. What happens if you have not worked the mandatory number of hours in the last two years and lost your right to re-certify? In this case you don't have to enroll in another CNA class but you must retake and pass the Texas CNA exam. When you've been out of the health care field for a while and you think you need help reviewing nurse aide knowledge and skills, a nurse assistant refresher course might be an option. CNA refresher courses are not mandatory and therefore you do not have to attend one of them in order to challenge the state examination.

How many hours per year does a CNA in Texas need to work to not lose the certification? Can she have worked 10 hours one year and on the second year not worked but just needs to show where she worked the previous year to not lose the CNA certification?

You must show proof of paid nursing assistant services in the last twenty-four months since your last renewal in order to keep your Texas CNA certification active. Nurse aides renewing their certification after September 1, 2013, are required to complete 24 hours of in-service education every two years. All approved Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Programs are eligible to offer in-service education. You may contact the Texas nurse aide registry at 512-438-2050 to verify this information. The facility where you work (or have worked) submits employment information to the Texas nurse aide registry once a year, however, if the facility does not perform this service then you are required to send the information to the registry. You may verify if your certification is still active by accessing the online verification system. You may verify the status of your CNA certification here: DADS Employability Status Check Search.
