Everyone knows that in order to work as a full-time nursing assistant in a licensed long-term-care facility in the state of New York you must be certified. Does this regulation also apply to individuals who perform CNA duties on a part-time basis? The answer is yes. Even if you are only a part-time or per-diem CNA, you still need to hold certification in order to practice in this state. Therefore it is not enough to complete a New York approved CNA class, but you must also pass the state examination for nursing assistants. Those who are still nurse aide trainees and have not yet graduated from a CNA training course in New York should remember that as soon as they challenge and pass the state test, they will receive a nurse aide certificate and a CNA wallet card attesting their credentials and right to perform basic care nursing skills. A lapsed CNA certificate may be turned into an active one as soon as you re-take and successfully pass the state competency examination. Nursing assistant programs prepare individuals for challenging the nurse aide certification exam and for entry level positions in health care environments. Each state has the authority to decide how many hours of training a nursing assistant course must consist of, as long as the minimum federal requirement of seventy-five hours is met. An individual who has paid for nursing assistant training classes and who becomes employed by a nursing home within a year of obtaining certification, is eligible for financial reimbursement. Compared to other training programs in the health care field, nursing assistant classes are relatively short and inexpensive. Obtaining state certification as a CNA is the main requirement for securing a nurse aide job at a nursing home, hospital, rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility.

I have been trying to find out how much does it cost or if it costs anything to take my New York state CNA certification down to Virginia with me and how should I go about transferring my CNA license?

The state of Virginia does not require a fee for certified nursing assistants applying for endorsement. The state of New York might ask for a fee to verify your certification status and report it to the Virginia Nurse Aide Registry. In order to work as a nurse aide in Virginia you must become certified in this state. Since you already have a CNA certification in New York, all you need to do is apply for endorsement of your certification in Virginia. To endorse your New York nursing assistant certification to Virginia you need to complete an endorsement application. Make sure you read and follow all the instructions in the application.
