CNA Training Programs in California
Right now you are probably just beginning your journey into the health care field, and most likely searching for a suitable CNA training program in California. What requirements must you meet later on in order to maintain a current CNA certification in this state? According to state regulations regarding certified nursing assistants in California, every two years you are required to complete a minimum of forty-eight (48) hours of continuing education credits, also known as in-service training hours. Each CNA that wishes to maintain active status on the California CNA registry must attend in-service education hours to satisfy the state requirement for each re-certification period.
Why do you need continuing education hours? Even though you have studied all the basics while attending a CNA training course, the in-service hours address any skills, techniques, and knowledge gaps that need to be refreshed or updated. If you work as a certified nurse aide for a skilled nursing facility, then your employer is the one who will provide you with the continuing education credits. As an employee you will attend in-service CNA classes during your work shift and receive the normal CNA hourly pay while in class. Upon renewal of your CNA certification, do not submit the forms proving you attended the required continuing educational credits. All certified nursing assistants should keep the forms documenting the completion of in-service hours for later auditing reference.

CNA Training Programs in Alameda County, California
Nursing assistant programs prepare individuals for challenging the nurse aide certification exam and for entry level positions in health care environments. Each state has the authority to decide how many hours of training a nursing assistant course must consist of, as long as the minimum federal requirement of seventy-five hours is met. Students interested in attending CNA classes have a wide array of choices when it comes to selecting a training facility.
Nursing assistant courses are conducted at nursing homes, vocational schools, private schools, and community colleges. Program length, admission requirements, and cost of training vary depending on the policies of every training facility. Several states have implemented legislation which requires licensed long-term care facilities to reimburse CNA employees for the costs associated with training. An individual who has paid for nursing assistant training classes and who becomes employed by a nursing home within a year of obtaining certification, is eligible for financial reimbursement. Compared to other training programs in the health care field, nursing assistant classes are relatively short and inexpensive. Obtaining state certification as a CNA is the main requirement for securing a nurse aide job at a nursing home, hospital, rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility.

I am a third year nursing student outside of California and I want to take my chance in the CNA field. Do I still have to undergo formal training in a CNA course despite of all my hospital exposures, skills and concepts I learned in my schooling? Can I take the state board CNA exam right away?

Individuals which have equivalent CNA training are eligible to challenge the nurse aide exam in California without completing a nursing assistant course. If you are currently enrolled in a registered nurse, vocational nurse, or psychiatric technician program AND have completed the nursing fundamentals coursework and clinical, then you qualify to sit for the CNA examination in California. The following documents must be submitted to the California Department of Public Health, Aide and Technician Certification Section (ATCS): an original school transcript or official letter from your educational institution listing the completed coursework in nursing fundamentals; a copy of the completed Request for Live Scan Service form, and the completed Nurse Assistant Initial Application form. Upon receiving and reviewing these documents, ATCS determines your eligibility, and sends you information on challenging the CNA exam. You should contact the California Department of Public Health, Licensing and Certification Program, Aide and Technician Certification Section (ATCS) at (916) 327-2445 or (916) 552-8811 to ensure you are following the correct process and to ask any questions you might have on completing the required applications.
