Medication Aide (CMA) Classes in Oklahoma
What is a certified medication aide? A CMA is a certified nurse aide who has successfully completed an Oklahoma State Department of Health approved program for administering medications. You must be certified as a nurse aide in Oklahoma prior to enrolling in a certified medication aide program. What are the requirements for admission in a state-approved CMA program in Oklahoma? If you wish to attend a medication aide course then you must be at least eighteen (18) years old, possess an active Oklahoma CNA certification, and show proof of completing a high school education. Only nurse assistants who have a minimum of six months of work experience qualify for admission in medication aide courses.
If you meet all these criteria then you are eligible to enroll in a certified medication aide course. What are the CMA courses like? According to state legislation, all CMA training programs must have of a minimum of forty (40) hours of instruction. Similar to CNA courses, the medication aide curriculum includes theoretical and clinical experiences. Each medication aide student must complete sixteen (16) hours of supervised, hands-on experiences in a clinical environment. CMA program instructors are usually nurses or registered pharmacists with experience in their field of practice. Upon completing a CMA training class each student must pass a state examination to become certified. The medication aide certification in Oklahoma must be renewed yearly.

Nursing assistant programs prepare individuals for challenging the nurse aide certification exam and for entry level positions in health care environments. Each state has the authority to decide how many hours of training a nursing assistant course must consist of, as long as the minimum federal requirement of seventy-five hours is met. Students interested in attending CNA classes have a wide array of choices when it comes to selecting a training facility.
Nursing assistant courses are conducted at nursing homes, vocational schools, private schools, and community colleges. Program length, admission requirements, and cost of training vary depending on the policies of every training facility. Several states have implemented legislation which requires licensed long-term care facilities to reimburse CNA employees for the costs associated with training. An individual who has paid for nursing assistant training classes and who becomes employed by a nursing home within a year of obtaining certification, is eligible for financial reimbursement. Compared to other training programs in the health care field, nursing assistant classes are relatively short and inexpensive. Obtaining state certification as a CNA is the main requirement for securing a nurse aide job at a nursing home, hospital, rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility.

My boyfriend is a CNA certified in Oklahoma but plans to move to New York City to live with me. Will he be able to transfer his Oklahoma CNA certification to work in a New York City hospital?

Your boyfriend has to apply for reciprocity in New York in order to be eligible for certification as a CNA in this state. He must have an active certification in Oklahoma and be listed in good standing on Oklahoma's nurse aide registry. To begin the process he needs to print and complete the nursing assistant reciprocity application. Along with the application he must submit a clear copy of his Oklahoma nurse aide certificate as well as the required fees. As soon as his application is received and approved by the New York nurse aide registry he may schedule and challenge the New York nursing assistant exam. Passing the state exam results in becoming certified as a CNA in New York. The nursing assistant reciprocity application can be found here: New York State Nurse Aide Registry Application.
