The Training Program Review Unit within the Department of Health Services is in charge of approving nursing assistant programs in California. Before a new nurse aide program is approved, the unit must conduct an on-site visit and curriculum review to decide if the program meets federal and state regulations. The CNA programs are approved for a period of two years. Biennial renewal is necessary for all approved nurse aide programs in California.
